Black Kitchen Countertops
I'm wondering if any of my readers have black countertops? If so, what material did you choose and why? I will always love the look of white marble, but I dont think that I'll have that in my current home. The black countertops are so attractive to me and look so sharp with white cabinets. Take a looksy...

We had black granite at our last apt and I HATED those counters with every fiber of my being. They were impossible to keep clean! Crumbs glowed, fingerprints were visible across the room, and water left to dry became streaks, rings, or spots. In short, I frequently ran out of windex becaue I had to clean the counters after cleaning the counters with a soapy dishcloth.
ReplyDeleteIf you're set on black (I shudder...lol), maybe try to find something with a pattern.
I have black soapstone counters (and white cabinets) and I love them. They are matte, not shiny. They are very easy to take care of, don't show dirt/crumbs/fingerprints and look great. The only quirk is that they can be knicked if you drop something on them. Mine have a few little marks on them, but I think it adds to the patina.
ReplyDeleteWe have black granite and actually really love it. It's not a solid black like you'd find with soapstone but instead a slightly mottled black with subtle flecks of amber and green (sounds odd but I assure you it's not). The fabricator called it Labrador Black.
ReplyDeleteWe also have friends with honed black granite that they love as well. It's fully matte so it's a little more forgiving than the shiny. It fits their more contemporary kitchen (white cabinets, cool grey walls, stainless appliances etc..)
Erica is correct. Shiny black countertops (of any material) are a nightmare. They show every little crumb and smear.
ReplyDeleteWe have black granite in our house and if i got to choose all over again I wouldnt pick it. It shows everything! It's hard to keep it looking clean even if it really is.

I don't have black, but I do have dark gray Caesarstone countertops (color is called raven) and I love them. They are shiny which we got because I knew their honed surface shows everything.
ReplyDeleteWe have Absolute Black granite in a "leather" finish. It is matte but with some texture, sort of like an orange peel. It is VERY forgiving and I love it. We have old cypress cabinets and old brick floors so the granite goes well with those rustic finishes. Good luck :)

Because everyone was choosing granite and granite knock-offs, we chose dyed concrete 8 years ago to be different. It's great! Matte finish, you can choose almost any color. Ours is a slighlty green/dark gray to offset our natural, cherry woodwork. Still modern and timeless.

ReplyDeleteI would like to echo Erica's comments exactly- I absolutely DESPISE my black honed granite counters! You can't just wipe up spilled water, dressing, etc with a damp rag or sponge- you have to then go over it with an actual cleaning product because any moisture will stain. I seriously think it has had a negative impact on my mental health, haha!
ReplyDeleteWe have black granite with white cabinets & I really like it. We've actually had this color combination in two different homes, so obviously we like it. I have ALWAYS wanted white marble, but my husband always convinces me it's not practical...but one day...
ReplyDeleteOurs is actually a black with specs of brown. Tropic Brown is the name, but it looks mostly black. I have also had solid black in a bathroom and it's beautiful, but does get water spots around the sink and it's not preventable or easily removed.
All those pictures you show were styled for magazines and some assistant just wiped them down and buffed them right before.
ReplyDeleteI have black 1986 laminate countertops which I inherited when we bought this house. I hate them. They show every little thing....EVERYTHING...as bad as white! Another thing to think about is that if you keep anything ON your counters they show up a lot more on either black or white countertops (because of contrast).

We just had absolute black granite done in honed finish installed and we really like it. It has look of soapstone but was half the cost. Our installer sealed it so we haven't had any moisture problems. We 're still working on painting the oak cabinets white but you can get a feel for it from our finished island at www.goldshoegirl.com. They definitely look darker and less gray against white cabinets than oak.
ReplyDeleteMy sister had black soapstone (with marbled grey-white swirls throughout) in her last house, and as gorgeous as they looked when oiled, she hated how easily they scratched. And did they EVER scratch. In a don't set your tea cup down on the counter top for fear of scratching way.
ReplyDeleteAt my FIL's house, he has black marble and they are gorgeous. Easy upkeep, durable and they look great. Definitely more $$$ than granite, but they don't stain.
We have black slate counter tops that are actually repurposed chalkboards from a school that was torn down. We left the kitchen rough and I love them. Husband polished them in the bathroom and like the other comments mentioned, they are water spotty. Also, you can't beat free :).

I love the look of black counters, too. I am about to select a counter for my laundry room which has pink walls and stainless Miele washer/dryer. I thought black might look terrific. The many negative reviews certainly give me pause, though I will be mostly using the counter for folding laundry, and there's no sink on that side of the room, so it might be OK.
ReplyDeleteWe just had Absolute Black granite installed. And we are very disappointed. It looked like solid black when we saw the slab in the showroom. But now that it is installed in our kitchen we can see lots of grey specks. It's not absolutely black like we expected. So beware when choosing Absolute Black.. Look t it under different sources of light before choosing it if you want a solid black. We have th shiny finish. I don't know how this would look honed.
ReplyDeleteI have black soapstone white veining on the perimeter and white marble with black veins on the island. LOVE them both! Its the best of both worlds!! If either of them get a scratch, I just use soft scrub to take them out! Easy as pie!

Absolute Black granite is not a true granite. It carries large amount of calcite in it causing it to react badly with water, and leave marks. It is still very durable though. Granite Pro
